Book an appointment for an extended driving license certificateWhat happens during a medical examination for a driving licence?
Medical examinations are mainly performed by general practitioners, but, sometimes, it may be necessary to obtain a medical certificate from a specialist. A medical certificate issued by a specialist is required in the event of a medical condition that may affect driving health and cannot be assessed by a general practitioner. Physicians have been specifically instructed to pay attention to long-term illnesses, medications and possible substance addiction or memory problems.
Examinations included in the medical examination:
For the examination, you will need a patient information form from the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom. If you have not received a patient information form, you can save and print the patient information form from Traficom’s website.External link
The examination includes a medical examination, an assessment of your health and a medical certificate for a driving licence.
- Visual acuity and field of vision
- Effect of possible illnesses and medications on driving ability
Between the ages of 70 and 75, depending on the driving licence category, an extended medical examination is required, where the impact of ageing, medications and illnesses on driving health is assessed more thoroughly.
Medical certificate for first driving licence
- You do not need a medical certificate for your first driving licence, as your own assurance that you meet the health requirements for driving is sufficient.
- The assurance is given in connection with the information in the application form.
- If the applicant is unable or unwilling to provide assurance, a medical certificate of the fulfilment of the driving health requirements must be submitted.
- You can obtain a medical certificate for a driving licence from a general practitioner.
