How to visit a general practitioner
Bring previous test results and medical records from other treatment locations and a list of medications you use to the general practitioner's appointment. This helps the general practitioner understand your health comprehensively. Measurements related to certain diseases, such as blood pressure, blood sugar, or PEF blow monitoring, also assist the doctor in their assessment.
Please note that the doctor cannot see health information in Kanta.fi serviceExternal link unless you have given separate permission for this in Kanta.fi. Viewing previous health information is often important for treatment and increases patient safety.
You can book an appointment with a general practitioner either online or by phone. You can also easily access Digital Clinic around the clock.
Arrive at the appointment 10 minutes before the scheduled time. You can check in using the OmaMehiläinen app, by showing your a valid identity document (identity card, passport, or driver's license) at the check-in kiosk, or by checking in at the service desk.
If you are visiting Mehiläinen for the first time, check in at the service desk. From the service desk, you will receive a form regarding the shared use of the patient register, which you can fill out while waiting.
If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection, primarily check in using the OmaMehiläinen app. In this case, it is also good to use a face mask to prevent infections.
The general practitioner will discuss your symptoms and health status with you and perform necessary physical examinations, such as examining the throat or skin, measuring blood pressure, or listening to the lungs and heart.
After basic examinations, the doctor may order further tests, such as imaging or laboratory tests, to refine the diagnosis and treatment.
The doctor will make a diagnosis and create a treatment plan, which may include medication, lifestyle changes, further tests, or referral to another healthcare professional.
If necessary, arrangements for possible follow-up visits, call times, referrals for further tests, or guidance to a specialist in another field are made.

Frequently asked questions about general practitioners
A general practitioner is a doctor who provides comprehensive healthcare for patients of all ages and treats various health problems.
You can easily reach Mehiläinen's general practitioner without an appointment through the Digital Clinic, where you can get medical assistance and advice without physically visiting a medical center.
A general practitioner diagnoses and treats diseases, monitors chronic diseases, performs minor procedures at the general practitioner level, and creates a follow-up treatment plan.
The general practitioner refers to laboratory tests or, for example, X-rays as needed. The doctor assesses the need for a specialist visit based on the results and refers to the appropriate expert if necessary.
A general practitioner has completed at least basic medical training, which is a six-year university study program leading to a medical license. A specialist in general medicine has completed an additional six-year specialist training in general medicine, which includes more extensive theoretical and clinical training.
Yes. Prescription renewal is primarily done at a general practitioner's appointment, for example, during an annual or other check-up. When a doctor prescribes medication, renewal practices should always be agreed upon.
When renewing a prescription, the doctor always takes responsibility that the use of the medication is according to recommendations and safe. Therefore, the doctor must always have sufficient preliminary information for renewal, such as up-to-date blood pressure measurements when renewing blood pressure medication.
Prescriptions valid for two years can be renewed for 28 months from the date of issue. Prescriptions valid for one year can be renewed for 16 months.
You can also renew a prescription by making a call request to a general practitioner or by using the Digital Clinic service if the treating doctor is not available.
A general practitioner treats patients of all ages, while a pediatrician specializes only in treating children's diseases. The choice depends on the patient's age and health issue. Sometimes a child may need treatment from a pediatric surgeon or an ear, nose, and throat doctor instead of a pediatrician.
If you need help choosing a specialist, you can contact our customer service around the clock at 010 414 00 (local network rate/mobile charge).
