Mehiläinen Sustainability Report 2023 has been published: relentless work in the fields of social responsibility, quality and environmental sustainability
Press Release 19.2.2024
Mehiläinen’s sustainability activities produced good results once again in 2023. Relentless work was carried out throughout the year in the fields of social responsibility, quality and environmental sustainability. During the year, Mehiläinen made progress especially in environmental and human rights activities and prepared for the new legislation. Mehiläinen’s Board of Directors also approved two new policies for Mehiläinen: the environmental policy and the human rights policy.
Mehiläinen made good progress in different areas of its sustainability programme: high-quality treatment and care; the development of the sector and financial responsibility; being a good employer and providing meaningful work; and sustainable growth and development. Each theme is monitored using various metrics, the results of which are reported as part of the Sustainability Report.
Another good indication of progress was that EcoVadis, an international company providing sustainability assessments, awarded Mehiläinen a Gold level rating for sustainability activities for the third successive year. Mehiläinen is among the top five per cent of all assessed companies and in the top one per cent in its industry.
- Customers and residents finding Mehiläinen to provide high-quality services is one of the most important factors for us. This year, I am particularly happy that the Net Promoter Score (NPS), an indicator of customer experience, reached an all-time high of 90 in private healthcare services. Customer satisfaction was also very high at 77 in our public healthcare services. The well-being of our personnel is another important factor, and it is wonderful that the total score of the personnel survey remained excellent (4.0/5.0), says Janne-Olli Järvenpää, CEO of Mehiläinen.
Mehiläinen also achieved the goals set regarding the sustainability metrics tied to its funding agreement: The quality index of Mehiläinen’s residential care services for the elderly increased to 85.3, and access to non-urgent care at health centres was high at 6.3 days, measured by the T3 indicator. In addition, Mehiläinen again reduced the emissions of its activities by 12 per cent from the previous year relative to its revenue.
Firm steps forward in sustainability activities
When it comes to the quality of care, Laatuportti is an important new tool at Mehiläinen. It has made the reporting and processing of quality non-conformities smoother. The Laatuportti system helps prevent non-conformities better than before. During the year, quality activities in social care services focused on the development of self-monitoring.
In climate activities in 2023, Mehiläinen became the first healthcare and social welfare provider in Finland to commit to the international Science Based Targets initiative. The goal is to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement by 2030. Mehiläinen also joined the Climate Leadership Coalition.
Mehiläinen’s Board of Directors approved two new policies for Mehiläinen as part of sustainability development to guide areas that are very important from the perspective of sustainability. The environmental policy and the human rights policy are the basis for the development of the company’s activities in these areas. The human rights policy also includes the company’s commitment to human rights. The third equality survey conducted by the company showed that the personnel’s experiences of non-discrimination and inclusion have remained excellent.
- At Mehiläinen, we have been on a lifelong mission for more than 114 years. We have a significant history behind us, but above all, a future to build. It is vital that after the next 100 years as well, we will still have a world to live in and societies in which health and well-being can be provided for the next generations, says Marina Lampinen, Director of Public Affairs and Corporate Responsibility at Mehiläinen.
The Mehiläinen Sustainability Report presents key information about the material themes and most significant impact of Mehiläinen’s sustainability activities in 2023. It is the second report in succession verified by an external party.
