Frequently asked questions about rehabilitation services
The goal of rehabilitation services is to maintain and promote the functional capacity of the person being rehabilitated. The rehabilitation is based on the person's own wishes and needs. The activities support the person's independent coping, well-being and opportunities for participation in their own everyday life.
Rehabilitation is suitable for people with an illness, injury or disorder that affects their functional capacity and ability to cope in everyday life, such as:
- neurological disorder or injury
- physical disability
- neuropsychiatric disorder
- sensory sensitivity
- challenges in managing social situations and interaction
- motor development delay
- challenges related to ageing or work ability
The rehabilitation plan is a tool that guides rehabilitation. The rehabilitation plan should take into account the person's physical, cognitive, psychological and social need for rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation plan is drawn up by a doctor. In addition to the doctor and the person to be rehabilitated, the person's family members and a multidisciplinary team can participate in the preparation of the rehabilitation plan. The rehabilitation plan is drawn up in public health care, such as at a health centre, in student health care or in occupational health care.
A rehabilitation plan is mandatory when applying for the following, for example:
- Kela's intensive medical rehabilitation
- Vocational rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation subsidy
- Rehabilitation allowance for vocational training or rehabilitation
