Benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine and getting prepared for vaccination
COVID-19 vaccination is an effective way of protecting yourself against the disease caused by COVID-19 and it reduces the risk of a severe COVID-19 disease. COVID-19 vaccination is particularly important for high-risk groups and people with primary diseases. Getting vaccinated also protects your loved ones.
How to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccination:
- Appointment booking: Book an appointment in advance and make sure you know the location of the vaccination site.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing, such as a short-sleeve shirt, so that the vaccine can be administered easily.
- Proof of identity: Have your identity document with you.
- Food and drink: Avoid drinking alcohol before the vaccination and make sure you have eaten and drunk enough.
New, updated COVID-19 vaccines
In autumn 2024, the new Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine, updated to be effective against the JN.1 variant, will be in use. The same COVID-19 vaccine is also used by the wellbeing services counties. The vaccines have been updated in accordance with the recommendations of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and they maintain the efficacy of the vaccines received previously. The updated vaccines offer better protection against the currently circulating COVID-19 variants.
Booster doses and recommendations
A COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is particularly recommended for the following groups:
- For the elderly in nursing homes or in regular home care
- For everyone aged 75 and over
- For severely immunocompromised people of all ages
In addition, vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 65 and over as well as everyone who is aged 18 and over and has a condition that increases the risk of a severe COVID-19 disease.
Basic series of COVID-19 vaccinations
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare has updated its recommendations regarding the basic series of COVID-19 vaccinations. The new recommendation applies to people who have not previously received any COVID-19 vaccinations.
The following is recommended as the basic series:
- One dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (instead of the previous recommendation of three doses) for everyone aged 18 and over and for high-risk group members aged 12 and over. Mehiläinen does not vaccinate people under the age of 18.
- Two doses of the vaccine for severely immunocompromised people.
- On a discretionary basis, 2–3 doses of the vaccine for individuals who have received a stem cell transplant.

The vaccine is administered to the upper arm by a healthcare professional.
Stay at the vaccination site for 15 minutes so that possible reactions can be monitored.
You will receive instructions on how to treat any symptoms. Potential symptoms after vaccination are usually mild and passing.

Frequently asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccination
- Clothing: Wear a short-sleeve shirt for easy administration of the vaccine into the upper arm.
- Wait after vaccination: After vaccination, please stay in the waiting room for at least 15 minutes so that we can help you if you have any reactions to the vaccine.
- Symptoms after vaccination: You may experience local symptoms at the injection site such as soreness, redness, feeling hot and swelling as a side effect of the vaccination.
- General symptoms: Other common general symptoms associated with the vaccination include fever, muscle ache, headache, fatigue, irritability and chills, which will subside relatively quickly. Local swelling of the lymph nodes may also occur. These typical symptoms are more common after the second dose of the vaccine. Local and general symptoms usually appear within a couple of days of vaccination. They will subside in a few hours or days. They can be treated with fever and pain medication, primarily paracetamol in accordance with the symptom.

Yes you can. Being vaccinated against influenza is a good idea especially for those who belong to any high-risk groups, but also for everyone else.
An occupational health care customer company can include COVID-19 vaccination in the vaccinations available through occupational health care. You can find out whether the COVID-19 vaccination is included in your occupational health care agreement in our online appointment booking.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available at all Mehiläinen medical centers.
Mehiläinen provides a variant or so-called booster dose for Finland, which is also used by wellbeing services counties. This is a new updated COVID-19 vaccine, Comirnaty JN.1, which has been updated to be effective against variant JN.1, in accordance with the recommendations of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and which is more effective against the variable COVID-19 virus strains.
Research shows that COVID-19 vaccines updated against the JN.1 variant maintain the efficacy of the vaccines received previously and provide protection against current COVID-19 variants. The updated vaccines were granted the marketing authorisation for Europe in July 2024.
