Ceramic or porcelain fillings
Ceramic fillings are a durable and aesthetic way to repair damaged teeth. Ceramic fillings look natural and feel just like real teeth. They are a particularly popular method for repairing incisors, as they offer an aesthetic result. The method is also well suited for repairing molars due to the material’s durability.
A ceramic filling offers the following benefits:
- Durable and strong material
- Aesthetic result that matches the tooth’s natural colour
- Resistant to yellowing
- Does not accumulate bacteria
- Long-lasting and more durable than a composite filling
Ceramic or porcelain crowns
The visible part of the tooth is called the crown. A ceramic crown is a good choice when the damage is extensive, the tooth has already been filled in the past, the tooth has undergone root canal treatment, or you want to improve the appearance of the tooth. A ceramic crown strengthens the structure of the tooth and provides long-term protection.
When to see a dentist for a ceramic filling
If you have a chipped tooth or experience aching, pain or other sensitivity, you should see a dentist for a dental check-up. A damaged tooth can also be asymptomatic, so regular dental check-ups are important to ensure that any problems are taken care of in good time. The dentist will recommend the most suitable material and filling method.
Treatment process for ceramic fillings or crowns
Making a ceramic filling or crown requires special expertise from the dentist. Ceramic fillings are made with a digital replicator and a computer-controlled manufacturing programme, which ensures a perfect fit. After this, the dentist attaches the filling to the tooth.
On the first appointment, the dentist determines the possible damage and discusses treatment options. Especially if the tooth is very damaged, a ceramic filling or crown is usually the best option.
The dentist prepares the tooth for the ceramic filling or crown and uses a digital imaging scanner to scan the tooth and bite. Ceramic fillings are usually made in a dental laboratory, and a separate appointment needs to be booked for attaching the filling. Until then, a temporary filling is placed in the tooth.
On the next appointment, the dentist will attach the ceramic filling or crown and ensure that it fits properly.
If necessary, a separate follow-up appointment is booked, especially if more than one filling or crown has been attached. In most cases, this is not necessary unless the bite feels abnormal afterwards. In this case, it is a good idea to book a follow-up appointment. However, the fit of the filling or crown is always checked during the next periodic check-up.
Ceramic Cerec fillings
The Cerec software allows some clinics to manufacture ceramic fillings and crowns during the appointment. In a Cerec filling, the dentist administers an anaesthetic, performs the necessary filing of the tooth and takes images of the tooth and the antagonistic tooth with a special imaging head. A computer-controlled drilling unit creates a fitting porcelain filling, which the dentist attaches to the tooth using fixing cement.
