Staining removal
Dental stains are removed at dental hygienist and dentist appointments. Superficial stains are removed by using the same methods as used for tartar, so dental stains and tartar can be removed at the same time.
Dental staining removal methods
There are several methods for removing dental staining. For example, ultrasonic devices, hand instruments, powder cleaners and paste cleaning are used as removal methods.
The method for removing stains is selected as required by the situation. The goal of an anti-infective therapy performed by a dental hygienist is to promote dental health, remove bacterial coverings and tartar, and prevent diseases.
Deeper stains on the tooth enamel are removed through intensive whitening, which is carried out by a dentist or dental hygienist during an appointment. Sometimes the tooth can become discoloured internally, for example, as a result of root canal treatment, in which case the discolourations are treated through internal whitening of the tooth. These procedures are usually performed by a root canal dental specialist.
After removing stains, it is important to follow the individual dental care instructions provided by your dental health care professional to prevent dental stains.
Sometimes stains cannot be removed, even with whitening measures. In this case, the discolouration can be covered with a filler in the colour of the adjacent teeth, ceramic laminate or a tooth crown.

Dental staining is removed at the dentist's or dental hygienist's appointment through different methods, such as ultrasonic devices, hand instruments, and intensive whitening. It is sometimes challenging or impossible to remove stains, in which case the discolouration can be covered with a filler in the colour of the adjacent teeth, ceramic laminate or a tooth crown.
The most effective way to prevent dental stains and discolouration is to avoid tooth-colouring foods and nicotine products, as well as take good care of dental hygiene.
To some extent, whitening toothpastes from pharmacies and shops can be used to prevent superficial stains on teeth. The mechanism of action of these toothpastes is enzymatic or mechanical. Mechanical stain removers abrade the surface of the tooth, wearing it down, and thus long-term use can damage the tooth enamel and make it even easier for stains to adhere to the worn surface of the tooth. Long-term use of abrasive toothpaste is, therefore, not recommended. It is also advisable to discuss the use of these products with your dental care professional.
