Dental X-ray – an important part of oral health care
Dental X-ray in brief
- Dental X-ray is always performed based on the need determined by the dentist.
- The imaging shows the tips of the tooth roots, the condition of the jawbones and joints, and the condition of the supporting tissues and attachments.
- The radiation doses obtained from dental X-ray examinations are low.
- With regular and timely dental X-rays, it is possible to avoid more burdensome and costly treatments.
Dental X-ray reveals oral diseases that the eye cannot detect
Many oral diseases are asymptomatic and are often not revealed by a dental check-up. Finding and treating infections is important for everyone’s general health.
The importance of dental x-rays is particularly emphasised in people with heart disease and cancer, diabetics and those undergoing joint replacement surgery, as untreated inflammation can jeopardise the success of the entire operation. X-ray examinations of frequently patched and rooted teeth are also important, as cavities between teeth and under old fillings can go unnoticed and untreated.
Diseases detected by dental X-ray imaging include
- caries, i.e. tooth decay
- periodontitis or an inflammation of connective tissue underneath the gums
- tooth root inflammations
X-ray imaging methods of teeth
The most common x-ray imaging methods used in dental care are panoramic tomography, i.e. full jaw x-ray, bite wing imaging and periapical imaging. It is always a good idea to start the treatment with a full X-ray of the jaw, which, effectively, reveals the general state of one's oral health. In this way, oral diseases can be addressed at an early stage and treatment can be targeted and dimensioned correctly, thus avoiding more demanding treatments later on.
Dental X-ray, or panoramic tomography, of the entire jaw
Panoramic tomography allows the scanning of the entire row of teeth, jaw bones and joints. Panoramic imaging provides useful information on caries, non-erupted teeth, asymptomatic dental inflammations and the condition of the jaws and sinuses, among other things.
It is a good idea to repeat the entire jaw X-ray at regular intervals based on the need determined by the dentist. In order to verify the diagnosis, our radiologists interpret all the jaw X-rays.
Bite wing description
Bite wing images are often taken during a dental check-up. The scan shows the areas under the tooth spaces and old fillings. Bite wing imaging does not image the root of the tooth.
Periapical imaging
Periapical imaging is one of the most common dental x-ray examinations. It is commonly used in the examination of caries, periodontitis and tooth root infections.

Frequently asked questions about X-rays
Dental X-rays are important because many oral diseases are asymptomatic and are often not detected during a regular dental check-up. Regular and timely dental X-ray examinations can prevent oral health issues and save you from more demanding treatments.
A dental X-ray shows the tips of the roots of the teeth and the areas under them that the eye cannot see. In addition, the images show the condition of the jaw bones and jaw joints as well as the condition of the supporting tissues and attachments of the teeth.
Untreated dental infections have a detrimental effect on general health. This is why finding and treating infections is important for everyone’s general health.
Dental X-rays are particularly important in these situations:
- The person has diabetes, heart disease or cancer.
- Patients undergoing surgery, as an untreated inflammation can compromise the success of the entire operation.
- History of dental root canal treatments and fillings, as cavities in the tooth gaps and under old cavities may go unnoticed and untreated.
Dental X-ray is always performed based on the need determined by the dentist. Regular and timely dental X-ray examinations can prevent oral health issues and save you from more demanding treatments.
You do not need to prepare for an X-ray scan of your teeth separately, as the scan can be performed in conjunction with a dental check-up. However, metal jewellery and piercings should be removed before an X-ray of the teeth, as they can interfere with the image.
At Hammas Mehiläinen dental clinics, all X-ray examinations are performed by using the latest and most modern X-ray equipment. The X-rays are immediately available for the dentist to analyse. In order to verify the diagnosis, our radiologists interpret all the jaw X-rays.
